Scientific activity
The scientific activity, which is documented by 320 papers, deals with the following main topics:
1) Structure and biogenesis of melanins.
2) Chemistry of bioactive metabolites from marine organisms.
3) Chemistry of bioactive metabolites from Mediterranean flora.
Over the first decade of professor Fattorusso’s academic activity his scientific research dealt with the study of the structure and biogenesis of melanins. At the beginning professor Fattorusso’s research was focused on elucidating the structure of natural and biosynthetic eumelanins, getting information about the building blocks of these complex and heterogeneous molecules. Then, feomelanins from mammals and birds have been studied, thus giving an important contribute to the definition of their biogenesis. This study led also to define the nature of some building blocks of these feomelanins.
The second and major research topic deals with the isolation and structural determination of secondary bioactive metabolites from invertebrate marine organisms and from algae. Chemical structure of the new metabolites has been elucidated mainly through spectroscopic methods (1D and 2D NMR). The above research, which started in the late 60’s, is still in progress with goals that have changed in the years. Initially, novelty of structures and biogenesis guided the choice of metabolites to be investigated; recently, bioactive metabolites aroused his attention. Particularly, the following metabolites were studied:
1) Bioactive metabolites playing a primary biological role in the producing organism
2) Bioactive metabolites affecting the environment
3) Bioactive metabolites as potential lead compounds in drug discovery
Lately a structure-activity study has been undertaken on some of the most interesting pharmacological active compounds and on their derivatives. Such a study involves also the synthesis of structurally related compounds. In the course of the above research more than 400 compounds were isolated, including steroids, terpenes, carotenoids, alkaloids, glycolipids, etc.

Nowadays the research deals with:
a) Chemistry of immuno-modulating glycolipids with anticancer activity from marine sponges and investigation on their mechanism of action.
b) Chemistry and mechanism of action of cytotoxic metabolites from Tunicates.
c) Chemistry and mechanism of action of endoperoxides with cytotoxic and antiprotozoarian activity from sponges.
d) Isolation and structure determination and quantitation of biotoxins responsible for toxic events by harmful algal blooms in the Mediterranean Sea. Study of the metabolism of marine biotoxins producing organisms (dinoflagellates and diatoms).
Over the last five years the chemistry of therapeutically active terrestrial plants of the Mediterranean flora was investigated. Significant results were achieved in the following fields:
1) Flavonoids and saponins from Allium.
2) Diterpenes active against multi-drug resistance from Euphorbiaceae
3) Diterpenes from plants employed in bitter liquors
4) Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes with insect-repellent activity.
